Ferbane/Belmont Under 12's contested their second final this year in Mount Bolus on Sunday, October 7th. This time it was hurling and their opponents were Seir Keiran from Clareen. Having beaten Clareen in the Playoffs, Ferbane/Belmont were in no way complacent about the outcome, but it was Clareen who took the spoils on the day winning by a handsome margin. It was clareen who started the better and took the lead with a point after only 2 minutes. A minute later, a 65 by Clareen's centre half-back Billy Connors confused everybody in the Ferbane/Belmont goalmouth and bounced into the net. Ferbane/Belmont rallied at that point and replied with a point from Darragh Corbett in the 7th minute. But Clareen countered immediately with a point from a free in the 10th minute and Eoin Lowry could only look helplessly at a weak shot from the Clareen corner-forward that trickled low into the net on 14 minutes. Both teams exchanged points before half-time, a point from a Ciaran Cahill free in the 18th minute was cancelled out by an excellent point from play on the 24th minute from Clareen. The half-time score was Ferbane/Belmont 0-2, Seir Keiran 2-3.
Ferbane/Belmont with some tactical changes started the brighter in the second half but could not register the first score. Clareen took control and scored 2 more goals and 2 points before Ferbane/Belmont got on the scoreboard with a point from David Kelly in the 16th minute. Brian Grehan, now playing at full-forward replied with an excellent goal on the run in the 17th minute but this was cancelled out by Clareen who scored three sucessive points in the 17th, 19th and 22nd minutes. Brian Grehan and Sean Milner finished the scoring with consolation points in the 23rd and 24th minutes. Final Score Ferbane/Belmont 1-5, Seir Keiran 4-8.
Great credit must go to this under 12 panel of players who reached two finals in this year. Their committment to training and the club is an example to all club members. It won't be long before this group of lads have a deserved county title under their belts. Losing one final is hard to take but beaten in two in a season can be heart-breaking. No doubt they will bounce back from their defeat and will have learned a lot. The club thanks all the players and team management Paddy, Paul, Mark and Damien for their efforts this year.
