FERBANE / BELMONT 5-5 ST.BROUGHANS 4-6

Ferbane/Belmont under 16 footballers won the 2004 League Title in a pulsating game in Cappincur on Monday, May 24th. In a hard-fought encounter, Ferbane/Belmont came from behind at the death to steal the title from a very resilient St. Broughans team. St. Broughans started strongly and opened the scoring on 4 minutes with a point. David Cox replied with a well-taken goal a minute later after a great movment through the middle of the field. St. Broughans responded with two goals in rapid succession in the ninth and tenth minute. Ferbane/Belmont kept in touch with a point from David Cox on 11 minutes and a superb goal by Dermot Daly three minutes later after been put through by a piece of quick thinking by half-forward Danny Cooney. St. Broughans scored two more points to Ferbane/Belmont's one before the break. These exchanges left the score 3-3 to 2-2 in St. Broughans favour at half-time.

Ferbane/Belmont started the second half with the advantage of the hill but it was St. Broughans who made the better start and extended their lead to 5 points two minutes after the restart. Almost immediately Dermot Daly punished some poor defending with a great solo goal which brought Ferbane/Belmont to within two points. This seemed to inspire the Ferbane/Belmont squad and 2 points from Johnny Fleming and another from Dermont Daly to one from St. Broughans after 39 minutes brought the teams back to a one-point diference. Disaster struck on 41 minutes when St. Broughans hit the net again but Joe Kenny who had just come on as a replacement for the luckless Stephen Greer scored a wonder goal from the 20 metre line after been put clean through by a most unselfish pass from the now rampant Dermot Daly. Cometh the hour cometh the hero and Danny Cooney who had an excellent game throughout scored the clever winning goal on 55 minutes which sealed victory by 2 points.
